Your risk budget is trading capital multiplied by risk per trade. Divide it by the distance between entry and stop to get a whole-share quantity, rounded down.
Before costs: shares = round down [risk budget ÷ |entry price − stop price|].
For example, 1% of ₹5,00,000 is ₹5,000. With entry at ₹100.00 and stop at ₹95.00, each share risks ₹5.00. The risk budget allows 1,000 shares, costing ₹1,00,000 with charges and slippage set to zero. The default charge estimates reduce this quantity.
A wider stop means fewer shares for the same risk budget. Cash-only sizing can reduce the quantity further to keep it within capital. It does not move your stop or increase your risk budget.
With automatic charges, the calculator finds the largest whole quantity whose stop loss, estimated round-trip charges and slippage fit the risk budget. Charges depend on quantity and your selected settings. In manual-cost mode, a fixed charge estimate is deducted from the budget before dividing by the stop distance plus combined entry and exit slippage per share. Costs and slippage are also reserved against capital.
For a capital-limit example, ₹10,000 at 2% risk gives a ₹200 budget. Entry at ₹1,000 and stop at ₹990 allow 20 shares by risk alone, but only 10 shares fit the cash available before costs. With cash-only sizing enabled, the smaller limit wins.
For a short, the stop must be above entry. The capital limit caps notional exposure and cost reserves; it does not calculate broker margin or determine whether a position can be carried overnight.
The calculator cannot decide where a stop belongs or whether a trade is suitable. A gap through the stop or a worse fill can make the actual loss exceed the estimate. Stops do not guarantee an exit price, and concentration remains a separate risk.

Already know your quantity and exit price? Zerodha's calculator breaks down brokerage, STT, exchange charges, GST and stamp duty for a buy price, sell price and quantity, and also covers F&O, currency and commodities.
